FUNFEST 2015
OVERVIEW
Funfest is an outreach event aimed to provide a safe and fun environment for children aged 4-12 on Halloween. With the proposed theme of "Around the World", the concept circles around visiting different parts of the world through thematic rooms within the building. Given the thematic ideas of Oriental, Polynesian, African jungle and a night in Europe I created a promotional poster and individual icons that were placed around the building to direct participants to each thematic room.
IDEATION
Because I did not have a full understanding of the different cultures, I researched concepts and ideas related to each category respectively. Creating a mind map helped organize my findings and differentiate between each category.
Sketching out several rough iterations, I kept in mind the four thematic ideas to incorporate into one poster design. The sketches were sent for review by the committee who were in favour of the first two sketches. Because they wanted a scalable design that conveys the theme of travel in a simple and direct manner, I was able to incorporate iconic landmarks/landscapes with a general hot air balloon design.
ICONS
In the early stages of the design process, I was required to research on the countries relating to the thematic ideas. I chose to create individual structures to portray each idea. I found it most difficult to differentiate between the African and Polynesian structures as based on my research, both live in small huts.
Through discussion with the event planning team, we were able to agree that African houses have a flatter, wider form and the roof encompasses more of the structure.
TITLE
Because Funfest is a kid's event, I used rounded loops to convey a fun and playful concept through the title. By using a watercolour brush I was able to achieve natural heavy and light strokes that I vectorized digitally.
FINAL REFLECTION
The biggest challenge I faced was trying to incorporate the four thematic ideas - four different cultures to work in one scalable poster. With the silhouettes of the buildings representing each culture, I was challenged to focus on the important aspects that differentiate each building such as curving the roof and hanging lanterns on the oriental building.
